Why is it that young children are so resilient with health and as we get older we are less so? Perhaps it is because our bodies are no longer building, (that hard work is behind us) and as we age, we actually must work harder to maintain our physical health. With that comes the aches and pains of overexertion, which when you were a fit 20 year old the exertion was nothing. The fact is if you're not 20, but say 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 or more, you've experienced the humility of the wear and tear your body has been through, because face it, gravity is a strong force and you're out there living your life. However, as many people look for ways to keep healthy (eat unprocessed whole foods, exercise regularly, sleep 8 hours, reduce stress) have you considered your comfort during the most restorative hours of your 24 hour day: the hours that you are in bed sleeping?
Because we spend about 1/3 of our lives in a horizontal position, restoring our health and energy so that we can be energized for the following day, it makes most sense that our bed surface including pillows, sheets and comforter is suited to our comfort. Sleeping begins with your bed surface or mattress, (most of us don't spend the night in the barn sleeping on hay anymore!)
Mattress Matters
Mattress types should be reviewed before purchase; choices include: memory foam, latex, coil spring, and air. Each one has its' merits, however, the most popular mattress type is still the coil or innerspring mattress. Brand leaders for innerspring include: Sealy, Serta, Simmons and Spring Air. For Memory foam Brand leader is Temperpedic and for Air Mattresses the Brand leader is Select Comfort. Mattress prices range from 0 to 00.
Bed Frame Matters
Do you want an adjustable bed frame? Here is an opportunity to sleep in many different positions, different than a typical flat bed surface. People with health issues like arthritis, GERD, and mobility issues often find that a moveable frame provides more comfortable sleep positions: hopefully leading to a restorative and restful sleep. While many people take sleep for granted, others have physical pains or disabilities that make sleep more problematic. (Don't skimp on the bed!) Also, there are folks that suffer from insomnia; again, (Don't skimp on your bed or frame. It should be comfortable for you.)
Investing in Yourself
We all want to keep ourselves healthy, but just like everything how much are we willing to do, or spend, to do so. Well consider that your health is priceless. When you don't feel well or if something hurts aren't you willing to spend or do whatever it takes to feel better? Sleep and relaxation are essential to all of us. Keep that in mind, when you lay down tonight on your bed. Ask yourself: Is this mattress providing support and comfort, does the bedding feel good? If your answer is yes, you are probably not reading this article. If your answer is no, or kind of, you should consider upgrading your sleep surface and bedding!
